Elizabeth "Lizzie" Keckley: (1818-1907)

Former Slave, Dressmaker, and Seamstress.

Birth Place: Hillsborough, North Carolina

Elizabeth Keckley was born into slavery. She became a dressmaker and a seamstress in Washington, D.C. After 30 years of being a slave she spent four years in the White House as a dressmaker for Mary Todd Lincoln. Keckley started a school for young black girls which taught them etiquette and sewing lessons. She was the founder of the first Black Contraband Relief Association and represented Wilberforce College in 1893 at the Colombian World's Exhibition in Chicago.

Madam C.J. Walker: (1867-1919)

Daughter of Former Slaves, Self-made Entrepreneur, Social Activist, and Philanthropist.

Birth Place: Plantation of Delta, Louisiana

Madame C.J. Walker was the daughter of former slaves. She was born in Delta, Louisiana in 1867 on December 23rd as Sarah Breedlove. She gave birth to one daughter by the name of Lelia Walker on June 06, 1885. In 1890, Madam C.J. Walker began to lose most of her hair due to the suffrage of scalp ailment. Eventually she began to tamper with homemade remedies and hair products that were store bought. She later moved to Denver in 1905 as a sales representative. It was shortly after she became known as the founder of her own hair products called "Madam Walker's Wonderful Hair Grower".

Rosa Louise Parks: (1913-2005)

Civil Rights Activist, Educator, Founder of Sewing Factory

Birth Place: Tuskegee, Alabama

Rosa Parks was born on February 4th, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. She became well educated in rural schools and private institutions. Before returning back to college to become a teacher her grandmother became ill and pasted away. She married her husband Raymond Parks on December 18, 1932. In 1955, Parks became well known to America as the "mother of the modern day civil rights movement" after refusing to give up her seat to a white male passenger on a bus ride home in Montgomery, Alabama. On December 1st, 1955 she was arrested in the city. This action caused the movement of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. She was truly a leader in her community and has greatly contributed to the transition of American Society. In addition to her efforts, Parks later moved to Detroit in 1959. Three years later together she and a friend opened a sewing shop on the west-side of Detroit.

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. January 18th is a federal holiday that was created to honor Dr. King as an historical civil rights leader that played an important role in our society. Born on January 15th, 1929 in Atlanta, Ga. he always participated in activities with his church and his community. After completing high school two years early, Dr. King was accepted to Morehouse University. He earned two Bachelor's degrees and a Doctor of Philosophy. On December 1, 1955 together the leader of the NAACP and Martin Luther King, Jr. showed a major support system to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The origins of this movement was due to the wrongful arrest of Rosa Parks. In 1964 he earned The Nobel Peace Price. Developed to support employees of the public works department who were African American, the March of 1968 took place in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. King was highly active in this movement and was assassinated on April 4, 1968 while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. He has really made a huge impact on the American Society by strongly standing up for his beliefs and sharing his views to equalize the United States of America. The Boston T Party of 1773

The Boston T Party of 1773 took place when the French and Indian War became an expense to the British. The government of King George III considered taxing the American colonies. After serching for ways to seize control over the colonial government they became strongly independent while the thrown was occupied with the war. Undistracted by Parliment, shipments of tea from the East India Company were delivered to New York and Philidelphia. Though the ships were not able to land, the tea-laden were allowed to dock in Charleston. Due to the large uproar in Boston from the three tea ships, all individuals who were present dumped cargos of tea into the waters of the Boston Harbor on December 16, 1773. Three months later the Intolerable Acts was passed by Parliment which closed the Port of Boston.

Sacred & Profane Love by: Titian

Sacred and Profane Love is a painting which was done by Titian a legendary artist who was born in the village of Pieve di Cadore. The piece was created in 1513-1514 on a oil on canvas that is 118cm x 279cm (46in x 110in). It is on display at the Galleria Borghese in Rome. The painting illustrates a bride who is draped in a flowing white gown. As she sits alongside of a cupid she is being assisted by Venus who appears as a naked female. The painting displays a jeweled vase that stands for happiness on earth. In liaison to this symbolic meaning, it also stands for eternal happiness in heaven by the one who bares the burning flame of God.

A Salute to All Veterans

The historical tribute of this day derives from “The Great War” which is also known as World War I. The battle came to an end on the 28th day of June in 1919 when the Treaty of Versailles was signed in France. This event took place outside of the Palace of Versailles. The war went on for seven months and officially went into effect on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour. On the other hand, the ending was officially recognized by the U.S. Congress on the 4th day of June in 1926 after passing as a concurrent resolution. However, it was declared by the 34th U.S. President; Dwight Eisenhower that all American citizens were to observe Thursday November 11th, 1954 as Veterans Day under Title III-The President Proclamation 3071. Due to this fact, the 11th day of each November is noted as Veterans Day in liaison to “the war to end all wars”.

The Victorian Silhouette Era

The 1800’s was an effective movement for tailoring because the sewing machine was finally invented. This made it more excessive for designers such as the father of haute couture, Charles Fredrick Worth to create custom and draped garments for high fashion clients such as the Empress Eugenie de Montijo and Elizabeth of Austria. The historical garment was an overskirt that had a capability of being lifted or buttoned up by tabs. The back of the dress was full and consist of several draps. The image to the right is a painting of the Empress Elizabeth of Austria by Winterhalter in 1865. The painting can be viewed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Historic Wedding Dress of the 80’s

In 1981 the wedding dress of Princess Diana was designed by British designers Elizabeth and David Emanuel. Though the gown was critiqued by many, it has remained a historic piece of history. The sleeves of were puffed made completely of taffeta. It was also hand embroidered and complimented with old lace. The dress consists of 10,000 sequins and pearl fixtures. Ball Gowns

Families, costume designers, and garment makers in New Orleans, Louisiana have spent several months preparing for Mardi Gras parades and balls by sewing and beading garments. Some of these festivities include the rituals of African, European Catholic, Native, and Protestant traditions. Together these cultures collaborate with one another to celebrate the spirit of Louisiana. Historical Mardi Gras ball gowns and costumes can be viewed at the New Orleans Museum of Art, Backstreet Cultural Museum, and The Presbytere Museum in Louisiana to discover Mardi Gras.
